Hours and Salary of a General Surgeon

By: Dalin Clark

We all know that surgeons make an enormous amount of money, but more specifically, how much do general surgeons make? Also, how many hours do they have to put in to earn that money? The salaries and hours depends on where they work, and their experience.

Salaries for surgeons are on a big scale with extremely large numbers. However, a general surgeon is a little less than surgeons who are specialized in one area. The average salary for a general surgeon is around $250,000 a year. The surgeon with the least experience, most likely will make around $110,000 a year, and the surgeon with the most experience will make around $360,000 a year. These figures are not set in stone because the salary will change based on the location of the surgeon, also one part of the country will not be exactly the same as another part.

If a surgeon makes six figures a year then they have to be putting in a lot of hours a week. Some surgeons work a normal 40 hour work week, but some work a lot more than that. Some shifts can last longer than 12 hours if they have a lot of patients. They spend the majority of their shifts standing on their feet in an operating room. That only adds to the extremely high amount of stress a surgeon has, so I would say they deserve the high incomes and they definitely earn them.
