Residency

After all your hard work in and dedication in medical school, you finally get into Residency. Residency is basically a trial period for actually working in the field an getting hands on experience. You work along all qualified doctors, nurses and all medical staff in a working environment. During this you practice and train directly under supervision so that no mistakes can be made. Medical school is where you gain knowledge on medicine, diseases and etc, but residency is where all those skills are put to the test. Residency is commonly two to six years at least, and could potentially last longer depending on the specific field you want to go into. During this time as a resident, you are getting paid. The average salary for residents are starting at $32,000 according to Mommd.com, while a sixth year resident can be making up to $48,000. The first year after medical school is known as the "Internship", or PGY-1(post graduate year 1).

Here we see a doctor explaining a patients lab results to two young residents:

During the Residency process you go on clinical rotations which is where you begin to see what you would like to specialize in. The Electronic Residency Application System, also known as "ERAS" is where all your information is compiled into one application, which is then sent out to medical residency programs to match you with the best program, and also allows hospitals to pick residents as well to fill spots.

During your residency term, you will receive long and hard hours, and potentially can be on call 2-4 days out of the week, and some times 36 hour shifts. During these times is where the people who are not cut out for this type of work are really weaved out yet again. Do not let these facts scare you because its all a process where it will all eventually pay off.
