New Advancement in Medicine

By: Fatamah Esa

This week a new medical test was created at Washington University in St. Louis called the ViroCap. The test has the ability to diagnose every virus that affects humans and is 52% more accurate than previous medical tests. When you are a doctor, looking for a diagnosis is very important to knowing what steps to take next to cure a patient, and it is just as important to be accurate as well. The new medical tool can even detect the slightest genetic variation in the same strand of a virus

Virus
Previous medical tests often weren’t sensitive enough to detect a virus. One time when I was a younger, I had a terrible stomachache and I went to the emergency room to get it check out. My doctor took a series of tests and said that it might be the stomach flu then sent me home. I remembering being confused on why he wasn’t certain what was wrong with me and it kind of frightened me to think what if it were something more serious than stomach flu.  It is good to have something like the ViroCap because now doctors can be sure what viruses are infecting their patients and then take the next step in treating them.

  1. I found it really interesting that a medical test so revolutionary was discovered. If the ViroCap is able to be put into use, it would be of great use to the medical field. I really liked how you brought up a personal example of your personal frustration with the medical field, and how the ViroCap would've helped you in that situation. Although the post hit some solid facts, I would've like to see a little more information and analysis on the new product.

    1. I couldn't put more information regarding the ViroCap because the product is relatively new and still being tested further and there isn't much about information out there about the ViroCap. It is still not for use yet but they hope by sometime in the next five years it will be. If you are interested, you check out the links in my sources I'm sure they will be of help.
